The Story of Minangkabau

The people of West Sumatra were worried about loosing their land. The king of Java wanted to take over their land. A man had a good idea to avoid the death and destruction. He suggested to have a battle of buffalo. If the King of Java lost in game, he let west Sumatra free. The King of Java sent his strong and fine buffalo. It made them dismay. A man had a brilliant idea. He had a new buffalo calf. The calf was given & sharp pieces of iron on his horns.
The battle came at last. The calf began to run. He had been kept from his mother for there days. He just looked at the buffalo like his mother. As he nuzzled, the sharp-pieces of iron pierced the buffalo. If the buffalo run, the calf would follow him. The buffalo fell and the people of the West Sumatra won.It meant that they could live freely. They began to shout “Minangkabau, minangkabau, minangkabau.........” (The buffalo wins, the buffalo is victorious). That is why the houses and the head dresses of the people are made to look like buffalo's horn and their land is called Minangkabau.
